Domain Name Costs: If you want a domain name associated with your web site (such as MYCOMPANY.COM), then you will need to register that name with Network Solutions (formerly InterNIC). That registration costs $70.00 and will cover the registration of your domain name for the first two years. After that, you will be charged $35.00 per year to maintain that registration. This fee is billed directly by Network Solutions and you must pay them directly. Web Site Hosting Costs: There are many ways to "host" your web site. "Hosting" is when your web pages reside on a computer somewhere that is connected to the Internet. If you do not have a permanent connection to the Internet on one of your computers, then you will have to either "co-locate" your computer at a service center or local ISP (Internet Service Provider), or pay some company to put your web pages on one of their computers. There are many companies that offer this service. If you already have Internet access via a local ISP, then you should check their costs as they sometimes give price breaks to current customers. Most of these companies charge a fee based on the size (in megabytes) of the web site or the anticipated traffic generated by the site. It should be noted that the "co-location" method is the most expensive and can easily cost several hundred dollars a month. Generally, the cost for hosting services for a fairly sophisticated web site (<20 MB) should be less than $100.00 per month. This will vary based on the company and the other "options" that they provide. These options might include: FrontPage support, CGI support, secure server support, shopping cart access, credit card processing support, and other "refinements". Depending on your needs, these "options" can add up quickly, so you will want to know what you need before you start shopping for hosting services. There will probably also be fees associated with the setup of your web site that you will be charged by the company you select to host your web site. These vary by company, but you should expect to spend as much as $200.00 in setup fees. Web Site Development Costs: By now you have your domain name and a place to host your web site. All you need now is to get the site developed. This can be the most expensive part of the whole process because it is time and labor intensive. However, this might be the most rewarding portion of the process as you see your web site "come alive". Costs can be contained in many ways. If you know exactly what you want your site to look like and have all of the graphics prepared ahead of time, the developer will not have to spend countless hours scanning graphics and producing revisions on the text that will appear on your site. Many developers also have "templates" available to them. If you choose one of these templates, the cost of the development can be sharply reduced. We at Webnetics, Inc. charge by the hour for web site development. Our current rate is $65.00 per hour. Assuming a web page containing just a few graphics, this usually works out to between $50.00 and $100.00 per web page. Since a modest web site will consist of around 10 pages, the total cost of such a site would be in the neighborhood of $500.00 to $1000.00 depending on the features and amount of graphics work that needs to be performed. Other Related Costs: There are other costs that are associated with developing and maintaining a web site. First there is ongoing maintenance of your web site. Things change, and therefore you will have to assume that your web site will need changes from time to time. The costs associated with web site maintenance generally are the same as those for the initial development of the site and the same hourly fees apply. Another cost is that of advertising your site to the world. This can be as simple as registering your web site with the "search engines". This will usually incur a service charge of $30.00 to $200.00 depending on the number of search engines with which your site is registered. Additionally, you will need to incorporate your web site's "address" (i.e. "http://www.yourcompany.com/") into all of your current advertising. This includes all printed material: business cards, stationary, Yellow Pages, catalogs, brouchures, and anything else you can think of.
